Let Freedom Ring! on July 4th
June 24, 2007
Concurrent Resolution Number 25
United States Senate & The House of Representatives“Whereas the tolling of the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pa., at 2 o’clock in the afternoon of the 4th day of July, 1776, proclaimed the signing of the Declaration of Independence; and
Whereas the adoption of this historic document marked the birth of our country as a free and independent nation; and
Whereas it is fitting that the anniversary of this great event should be appropriately observed in each year at the same moment throughout the United States;
Now, therefore, be it Resolved, that the Congress hereby
(1) declares that the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence should be observed each year by the ringing of bells throughout the United States at the hour of 2 o’clock, eastern daylight time, in the afternoon of the 4th day of July, or at such other time on that day as may be determined by local authority, and
(2) call upon civic and other community leaders to take appropriate steps to encourage public participation in such observance.”
Adopted 26 June 1963
As Vice-President of the San Antonio Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, I will be standing proudly in front of the Alamo at 1:30 PM on July 4th for the local bell-ringing ceremony. State Senator Jeff Wentworth will be the speaker, and the color guard will be in period costume.
The National Observance will take place in Philadelphia, and bells will ring across the nation to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. You can watch a video, download a brochure, and learn more at LetFreedomRing.org.
I am proud to be the descendant of Patriot Adam Mitchell and grateful to all the Patriots who had the courage to create a new, and free, nation.
If you live in the United States, I hope you will join me on July 4th in commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence 231 years ago.

Two Important Things: Accuracy and Assistance
June 16, 2007
Recently I asked for help in finding accurate information about Nicholas Fain. Although I’d done a lot of research, I had come up with contradictory information, and I wanted to get accurate information for my book.
After Spring House was published, I discovered the name of one of Adam Mitchell’s daughters, my great great grandmother, was misspelled. And several years ago, I learned that one of my family’s favorite stories about an ancestor was wrong. So getting the facts straight has become even more important to me.
Fortunately, I have found that people involved in genealogy are always helpful. Several people contacted me, and I got the information and documentation I need from Fain descendant Margaret Price Eike.
Descendants of Adam Mitchell and people with ancestors named Bowles have also contacted me. In some cases, we were related; in others, we couldn’t find any relationship. But every contact provided helpful information and a chance to meet someone else enthusiastic about genealogy and family history.
So, I’ve said it before to people who’ve helped me in the past. Now I’ll say it again to every one who is helping me today – thanks!
Home Again
June 12, 2007
The 2007 Frontiers in Writing was great, and I had a wonderful trip – but I’m glad to be home!
The workshops and networking at the conference convinced me of two things:
- The independent publishing route is right for me and my books.
- I need to finish the second book in The Westward Sagas … and the third!
I’m writing Book 2: Adam’s Daughters and have already done a lot of research for Book 3. Now that I’m back home, I’m getting back to writing.

On the Road Again
June 6, 2007
I just left Lubbock where I had the privilege and pleasure of watching my grandson play in the West Texas High School All-Star football game. If you know anything about West Texas, you know they take their high school football very seriously! It was a great game all the way down to the wire, and I’m proud to say my grandson’s team, The Blue Team, won!
My next stop will be in Canyon, Texas to see The Official Play of the State of Texas in Palo Duro Canyon.
This weekend, I’ll be in Amarillo for the 2007 Frontiers in Writing conference. I’m looking forward to the chance to learn more about my craft and network with writers and industry professionals.
A Peek Inside …
June 1, 2007
The San Antonio Express-News recently featured my home in an article by Barbara Higdon entitled Spaces – Family mementoes fill ‘cowboy funky’ home.
Lulubelle was proud as punch that her picture made the front page of the SA Life section of the paper, but she got in a real snit when she discovered that her picture was relegated to the slide show online. Though the caption under the photo with the article says it’s Lulubelle, you can see it’s really the area around the hot tub. Be sure to view the slide show and admire Lulubelle in slide #2.
Hope you come “visit” Lulubelle and me in our “studio” where I write The Westward Sagas!
