Nicholas Fain: Forgotten Patriot
As I’m writing Adam’s Daughters, I’ve been doing a lot of research on Nicholas Fain. I believe he is one of the greatest patriots of the Revolution, and I’d like to give him and his family proper tribute. But I’m having a hard time finding accurate information.
I do know that Nicholas, five of his sons – Samuel, John, William, Thomas, and Ebenezer, and his son-in-law Andrew Evans (married to Fain’s only daughter Elizabeth) fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Another son David was killed by Indians. His last son Reuben has traditionally been credited with service in the Revolution, but I haven’t found documentation to verify that.
I don’t know of any other family risking so many lives for the Revolution. Later Fain and his sons protected the settlers in the Washington District as Indian fighters. It’s a shame that there is no monument recognizing the contributions of the Fains to the Revolution.
Although I’ve found references that Nicholas Fain was buried in Reed Cemetery, no one seems to know where the grave is. I’ve been to Jonesborough, searched the cemeteries, and enlisted the aid of the Jonesborough Genealogical Society. But I still haven’t found a grave or verified the date of his death.
Some sources say he died in 1783/1785, some say 1785, and some say 1789.
I’d like to recognize the Fain family in Adam’s Daughters for their remarkable service, and I would like to contact the Sons of the American Revolution to get Nicholas Fain’s grave marked as a Patriot of the Revolution.
Can anybody help me with documentation on Nicholas Fain and his family?

I am descended from Rueben Fain and Isabella Taggett. I have an unbound book of Fain family history dating from sometime in the 1800. Yes, Rueben was a Revolutionary soldier. Nicholas Fain was a member of Napolean’s staff and wrote his definitive biography. My grandaughter has taken the name Faine as her pen name. Look for it!

I am the sixth great granddaughter of Nicholas Fain and Elizabeth Taylor Fain. I belong to the DAR and I went in under Nicholas Fain who is a patriot from the Revolutionary War. I have ridden by Thomas Fains home place in Decatur, county Ga. He Was buried on his land and no one seems to know where rhe grave is but there is a nice monument in front of the courthouse in Bainbridge, Ga . that was put there by the DA R. I have the newapaper article about the memorial and it is quite interesting. I also helped Agnes Axson with a book that she wrote about the Fains Of North East Georgia.. I came down Rrebecca and James mcMullen side of the family. The McMullens keep tons of records and I do also. I personall know so many Fain and McMullen relatives and tons of records. I heard that Nicholas and Elizabeth came to America from Ireland and landed in Chester, Pa. I have pictures of where Capt John Fain is buried and others of the Thomas Fain LineThey are buried in the middle of a field with an iron fence around it with the name FAIN as you go in at the gate.Thomas married Mary Parramore and her parents were Matthew Parramore and Eizabeth ? I would like copies of your books. If I can help you please letme know, d904- 786 5685.

Eunice, My books are written for entertainment. I have not done alot of research on the Fain family, other than the three sons of Nicholas that married into my family. The dates and everything in the story of Adam’s Daughters’ marriages, etc., are correct.
Kristie Dean@Divorce Your Travel Agent.com
Hi. I am a descendant of Mary Fain and John Pearce. Does anyone have any information on whether or not she’s a descendant of Nicholas? Also, when does this book come out? Thank you!!
Admin
Kristie, my book Adam’s Daughters has information on Nicholas’ sons. There is information available on the SAR and DRT websites on the Fain family. I would have no way of knowing if they are kin as I only researched the Fain family as it affected my line only by marriage. Please realize that the Westwardsagas series is not about genealogy work. They are written for entertainment in hope that today’s reader can better understand the life that our ancestors lived.

Hi, another Fain descendant coming out of the wood works. I’m the eighth great-granddaughter of Nicholas and the 7th great-granddaughter of Ebenezer through his child Rebecca. I’m currently trying to join the Daughters of the Revolution and was wondering if you could share with me some of what you have or point me in the directions of another Fain descendant.
Thank you
Admin
The DAR and the SAR should have information you need on their websites under Patriots. That information was not in my genealogy work I did on my family. Hope this helps.

I am putting together a Fain family group on Facebook for anyone interested.

Hi all! Wow, what an amazing find. I am Ferris Fain’s granddaughter and have been wanting to learn about our very interesting past and here it is and then some. His son John, my Dad, died Oct 2009 and his birthday happened to be the same month and day as Capt John Fain’s day of death. Thank you for this incredible resource and can’t wait to find out more. What a great site this is. My husband’s Great Grandfather was Jefferson Pendergrass Pierce and he is buried in Oklahoma. With the help of the book “Jefferson County, Tennessee Families And History 1792-1996′, we were able to trace the Pierce family back to Albert Pierce, then to John Pierce who married Mary Fain, daughter of Capt. John. It sounds like your book, “Adam’s Daughters” will supply us with so much information on the Fain family.
My question is, could I purchase the book directly from you so you could sign it for us? Hopefully, you will reply thru my e-mail address. Thank you so much. Kay

So great to run across this! I’m also a descendant of Nicholas Fain and so happy to run across this work. Would love to see more information about the full family tree. I have a strange history as my great-grandfather William Fain was actually born William Thomas and changed his name to Fain (his mother’s maiden name). Or so my cousins in South Carolina told us after researching!

I appreciate getting this information about the Fain family. Hope you get to see the cemetery.

I too am a descendant of Nicholas Fain and John Fain. Nicholas was my 6th great grandfather on my mother’s side. John of course was my 5th. My information has John being killed by Indians in North Carolina. I have a photo of the headstone of Nicholas Fain. I actually found it on Ancestry.com. Having grown up in Upper East Tennessee, next time I’m home I’ll go look for the cemetary.

Nicholas Fain provided Patriotic Service during the American Revolution. If looking for information on Nicholas Fain in the files of the Daughters of the American Revolution, use Ancestor File #A038295
He was bon in 1730 in Ireland and died after September 12, 1789 in Washington County, North Carolina. His wife was named Elizabeth Taylor. She was born 1734 in England and died after 1795 in Washington, South West Territory. They were married 1752.
Children proven:
Reuben married Sallie Fannie Medlock
Reuben married Isabella Tagget (second wife)
John married Nancy Agnes McMahan
Thomas married Mary Parramore
Samuel married Rosannah McMahan
Ebenezer married Mary Mercer
You can always submit proof of other children, this only means the children above have already been proven, not that they are the only children of Nicholas and Elizabeth Fain.

Dear Cathy,
I read your comments with great interest. I am a 6th Great-Granddaughter of Nicholas Fain through his son, Ebenezer. I am having a great time sharing our family history with my 9 grandchildren & I will be getting together with them over Spring Break. I would like to share that Senator Evan Bayh is a descendant as well of our ancestor, Nicholas Fain. Would you mind sharing what you know about his line, and how we know this to be true, so I can share this with my grandchildren? Would appreciate it so much. My email address is hankandcarolh@yahoo.com. Would love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Carol

Update on “Adam’s Daughters”? I’ve been out of touch for awhile due to illness. Always interested in the Nicholas Fain line. Best of luck to the new book.

Cathy,
Thank you for your comment. While researching the Westward Sagas series, I became intrigued with Nicholas Fain and his family. I have written about the Fain family in the first 2 books, Spring House and Adam’s Daughters. These works are fictional historical novels based on the Mitchell, Mc Machen, Fain, and other families during the early years of our nation’s existence. I hope you enjoy them.
Cathy Pierce
I am also a descendant of Nicolas Fain. So is Senator Evan Bayh from the state of Indiana. Nicolas Fain is listed in the DAR. Not sure Patriot #. I am descended through his son Thomas. Two of Thomas’s daughters married McMullens from Georgia that later settled in Pinellas County, FL. There is a museum in Largo, FL. There is info about it online at http://www.pinellascounty.org/heritage . I hope this helps some of you out and I hope to read the book that will be based on our heritage.

Micki,
You are way ahead of me. I have only researched the Fain family up to the death of Nicholas Fain in the late 1700′s. There has been much written on the Fain Family. I would start with what you have and work back towards Nicholas Fain. Lots of information available from the Washington County TN Genealogical Society.
Micki
Perhaps you can help me. My great grandmother was Buena Fain, born in Hawkins County, tn around 1886. She married a Henry Hall. I cannot find any info on her. Perhaps she is also realted to Nicholas Fain? Any information you could provide woul be greatly appreciated.

Debbie,
You can run to the bookstore, but they will have to order the book. Most bookstores don’t stock it.
Amazon.com has it in stock so you can order and receive the book in a few days.
Or you can order right here, and I will autograph a copy for you and ship it out to you as soon as I return from the book launch in Jonesborough, TN. You can see the activities taking place in Jonesborough on the Appearances page.

Hi, It is the end of September should I run to the bookstore

It’s amazing how many of us are related. I too am a descendent of Nicholas Fain on my mother’s side. My grandmother’s last name was Fain and she was originally from Tennessee. I know my family has the complete geneology of the Fains going back to Nicholas and Elizabeth. I’m honored to be a descendent of such a great man and family name. I live in MD but I understand the Fain name is still quite strong in that area.

Barbara,
You can read more about Spring House and order an autographed copy of the book at Spring House.

Please advise me regarding the book Spring House and the forthcoming book Adam’s Daughters.
Nicholas Fain and Ebenezer Fain are my ancestral grandparents
also John Fain and Margaret Fain Thomas.
I attended The Reed Cemetery Memorial for Nicholas Fain.
It was well done.
Please keep me informed.
