Nicholas Fain: Forgotten Patriot
As I’m writing Adam’s Daughters, I’ve been doing a lot of research on Nicholas Fain. I believe he is one of the greatest patriots of the Revolution, and I’d like to give him and his family proper tribute. But I’m having a hard time finding accurate information.
I do know that Nicholas, five of his sons – Samuel, John, William, Thomas, and Ebenezer, and his son-in-law Andrew Evans (married to Fain’s only daughter Elizabeth) fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Another son David was killed by Indians. His last son Reuben has traditionally been credited with service in the Revolution, but I haven’t found documentation to verify that.
I don’t know of any other family risking so many lives for the Revolution. Later Fain and his sons protected the settlers in the Washington District as Indian fighters. It’s a shame that there is no monument recognizing the contributions of the Fains to the Revolution.
Although I’ve found references that Nicholas Fain was buried in Reed Cemetery, no one seems to know where the grave is. I’ve been to Jonesborough, searched the cemeteries, and enlisted the aid of the Jonesborough Genealogical Society. But I still haven’t found a grave or verified the date of his death.
Some sources say he died in 1783/1785, some say 1785, and some say 1789.
I’d like to recognize the Fain family in Adam’s Daughters for their remarkable service, and I would like to contact the Sons of the American Revolution to get Nicholas Fain’s grave marked as a Patriot of the Revolution.
Can anybody help me with documentation on Nicholas Fain and his family?

Glad you enjoyed Spring House, Carol.

Just finished “Spring House” and enjoyed it very much, and I am looking forward to Adam’s Daughters. Have started John Fain’s “Eliza Fain Diary”….very, very interesting reading on the Fains, and their perspectives on the issues of the times during the Civil War, and Eliza’s first hand account of what her life was like during this traumatic time in our history. My thanks to Jamie Shifflet for her recommendation of this book.

I am looking forwarding to purchasing and reading “Adam’s Daughters” as soon as it is out. I have enjoyed some interesting and informative emails from a “Fain Cousin”. I have not heard anything from a descendant regarding the Civil War diaries. Would love to hear from them.
Thank you ,Sharon Conley ,for the details on the Nicholas Fain Ceremony. It is my wish to attend, but have not been able yet to firm up travel plans. Do I need an invitation for that event, also if I am able to come, can I bring several other family members along, and do I need to let anyone know ahead of time or can I “just show up”?
Anything else I need to know about this event?
Thank you.

Carol,
Hope you get some response from other Fain family members who read this blog or perhaps those who attend the dedication in June. If you don’t hear from the descendant with the Civil War diaries, I will send an e-mail on your behalf.
Carol Hoeksema
Thank you very much.
I would like to add that I would love to receve photos ot the Fains possibly from tintypes of Ebenezer and Elizabeth or any others from around the Civil War Period and later if there are any Fain Family members who wouldn’t mind emailing them to me. I only have a very almost impossible to see copy ot my Grandmother Sallie Louellen Fain with her brothers and sisters and her parents Osco and Elizabeth Patterson Fain. If anyone happens to have a good copy of that photo, would sure love to have a copy! Also would love to be able to read the Fain Civil War Diary. Is that anyway possible?

My Great Grandmother was Azubah DeCrow Fain, of Oregon. Her father was William Bicknell Fain, originally from Tennessee. He was born abt 1823/25.
Would anyone have any information about him, or his family? I am having trouble finding his relation to the rest of the Fain’s of Tennessee.
Thank you!
By the way, in my family “Fain” has been used as the 1st born’s name, or middle-name for 5 generations now.

amieshifflett,
You are fortunate to have those diaries. They must be fascinating reading.

I’m the 5th Great Granddaughter of Nicholas Fain through his son Capt. John Fain, Nicholas Fain(1st mayor of Rogersville), Hiram Fain, Earnest Fain (confederate in 63rd TN), Alvin Fain (WWI vet) from Hawkins county, TN. I would love to have a copy of your book. I’ve been lucky enough to have copies of diaries that were kept during the civil war of my GG Grandfather Hiram Fain and his sister-in-law. I’m like everyone else. I know he was buried on Knob Creek but didn’t know the name of the cemetery. I think the gathering of the Fain would be wonderful. There are so many cousins out there that we don’t know.

Enjoy reading response, recognize some names as contributors to Nicholas Memorial. Monies are still being being received by Dean Thomas, who has worked very hard to get things ready for a grand memorial. Hope all will come . I descend to Nicholas through Ebenezer – David-John Simpson – Newton T. Fain and his son Jasper T. Fain. Let me know when your book is ready. Jeanette

The memorial for Nicholas Fain is well on its way. The man in charge is Dean Thomas, and I am sure that he would like to hear from you, especially regarding the SAR assistance. His e-mail is deant@catt.com
He had mentioned some time ago that there wasn’t anyone in that area that had period costumes, etc.

A memorial for Nicholas Fain is now in progress. It will be established in Reed Cemetery in Johnson City Tennessee. The project will probably be completed sometime in the spring or Summer of 2009. His son Ebenezer has a memorial at HotHouse Creek Georgia.

Sharon,
Thank you for the information. Would you have more details time and date?
Edward,
Always great to hear from descendents of Nicholas Fain. As you can see from the above comment, there will be a memorial marker dedicated to him at Reed Cemetary in Jonesborough, TN in the spring. Please send me your contact information so that I can put you on the mailing list for more information as I receive it.
Edward John Fain
My grandfather was Edward S Fain from Macon/Butler Ga. We grew up in Atlanta. Theoretically, I am a descendant of Nicholas Fain.
Anyone know about the Fain’s from Georgia. I know there were some Fain’s up in Helen Ga that I believe I was related to. Talked to them once. They owned a store in Helen Ga.
Sharon Conley
Did you know that there is a memorial marker being placed in the Reed cemetery next spring for Nicholas Fain?

Susan Diegel,
I have tried to email you with no luck. Can you email me at Halldaugherty@hotmail.com. Elizabeth Florence Mason, daughter of Richard and Mary Ann Fain Mason, married James Delvan Hall. I have a copy of Elizabeth and Jame’s marriage certificate with Richard Mason listed as a witness. They were married in Notla. I don’t know why I can’t get the emails to go through. I hope to hear from you and I can’t believe I may be able to see a photo of Mary and and Richard. Thanks. Debbie

I wish David much luck with the writer’s creative spirit as he gives the Fain family their rightful place in American history. I’ll be glad to share information about the Fain family with my “Tennessee Cousins”. In this world of uncertainty and war, it is good to know our family lines continue. Margaret
Susan Diegel
Note to David: I’m sorry but I never received your response.
Note to Deborah Daugherty! Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Fain who married Richard Mason — they are my great-great grandparents and I have a picture of them. Your grandmother, Elizabeth, was her name “Martha Elizabeth” by any chance? If so, then her sister, Julia Cordelia Mason, who married a John Hampton was my great-grandmother.
Could you please email me directly at: tiredmomsd@comcast.net and put your name and Fain/Mason in the subject line?
Thank you – Susan Diegel, Knoxville, TN

Susan, Margaret, Ashley, Deborah, and Susan,
I’ve responded to each of you privately. Thanks for your input. I’ve gotten a lot of conflicting information, and I’ve asked everyone who has given me information for documentation so I can research more thoroughly. I’m working really hard to make sure everything in my story fits the facts.
Nicholas Fain, his sons, and daughters-in-law will be key characters in Adam’s Daughters. I’ll update this blog when I can say when the book will be available, and you can also sign up for my mailing list to be notified.

Nicholas Fain was my 5-great grandfather on my mother’s side. I have copies of quite a lot of information on his family which was compiled by Christine Webb Geoghegan in 1977. My information has Nicholas dying at his home on Knob Creek, Washington County, North Carolina (now Washington County, Tenn) but the location of his grave is unknown. The date of his death that I have is 1785 & that Elizabeth was still living in 1795. I have the same information about King’s Mountain & the family’s involvement, including the son-in-law.
Please let me know if you include Fain information in your book. I would love to get copies. Thank you for doing this. Susan
Deborah Daugherty
Hello, At first blush, it would appear my ancestry may involve Ebenezer and Nicholas Fain. I would appeciate any information that could be shared. Polly Ann Fain married Richard Mason, and had a daughter Elizabeth Mason who was my great grandmother’s….whew. I just lost my dad this year, who I was very close to, so this research means an awlful lot to me. Thaks for any information you can share. Debbie

Hello -
I am related to Captian John Fain. I too have been taken to Jonesborough, and I too have walked around the graveyard. I have just begun looking a my family history and would like to thank you for all your research.
Below is a email from my mother….( Fan Rhea Lucy)
I don’t remember anything about Kentucky in the family history….
Mamie’s ( Marjoirie Luikart Fain ) DAR membership was based on a Captain John Fain, her ancestor, who was from the area of Tennessee which did not carry that name of Tennessee yet at that time…
He was in the Battle of King’s Mountain which was (I think) somewhere in the Western North Carolina area… Battle of King’s Mountain people were at some point at Fort Shelby… which is Bristol area now… quite near (or probably at that time included the land where Mamie’s Cherry Street house was… maybe even Granny’s house.. but those houses are of 1930′s and 1910 vintage,,,, just my idea.. never saw that small fact in print or discussed anyplace….)
Battle of King’s Mountain is fairly famous in the Revolutionary War and might be amenable to an internet search… Damn, wish I had had your level of interest and learned more of these things …
hope this reference info is useful to you… Peace and Happy Revolutionary War…. Ma

I am the 6th g-granddaughter of Nicholas Fain through my father, Albert Fain Price, and my grandmother Lucy Fain, Hawkins Co,TN and on back through Capt. John Fain, son of Nicholas Fain and Elizabeth Taylor Fain. John Fain fought many frontier battles under Evan Shelby, including Point Pleasant, along with his brother Samuel. My paternal lines include Price, Fain, McMahon(wives of some of the Fain men) Richard Gammon, first Register of the new state of TN, and Stephen Holston, namesake of the mountain and river. I have been to Jonesboro, also, looking for the home and place of burial for Nicholas and Elizabeth, but was unable to find anything I could document. Capt. John Fain was killed by the Cherokees at Citico Aug8, 1788. If I can be of assistance, please contact me.

I’m the 6th (& 5th) g-granddaugter of Nicholas and Ebenezer Fain. Nicholas is supposed buried in Knob Creek Cemetery near Jonesborough. There is a monument to Ebenezer which was erected a couple of years ago. I’m attaching the link which shows Ebenezer’s monument. I have some information on the family but can put you in touch with others who can give you much more information.
